Case Study: Whiston Council Multi-Use Games Area Transformation

Education MUGAs

STM recently completed the installation of a new artificial turf surface at the Multi-Use Games Area in Whiston, delivering a modern, durable, and versatile space for the local community. The project focused on upgrading an existing facility to improve safety, usability, and year-round accessibility, ensuring it could support a wide range of sports and activities. Working closely with local stakeholders, the new surface was designed to meet the needs of both organised sports clubs and casual users, helping to encourage greater participation in physical activity across all age groups.

Why did you choose artificial turf for your project?

Artificial turf was chosen because it provides a durable, low-maintenance surface suitable for a wide range of sports and activities. It allows the facility to be used throughout the year in most weather conditions and provides a safe, consistent playing surface for users of all ages. The surface is also more cost-effective in the long term compared with natural grass, which would require significant maintenance and regular closures.

What was the aim of your project?

The aim of the project was to improve the quality and accessibility of the Multi-Use Games Area in Whiston by providing a modern, safe, and versatile surface. The project was designed to encourage greater community participation in sport and physical activity, particularly among young people, while creating a facility that can be used by a variety of sports groups, clubs, and local residents.

Have you benefited from the new surface?

Yes, the community has benefited from the new surface. The improved playing conditions have increased the usability of the facility, allowing it to be used more frequently and for a wider range of activities. Users have reported that the surface is safer and more enjoyable to play on, and the facility is now more attractive for organised activities and casual use.

How would you rate the work that has been done?

The work carried out on the facility has been completed to a high standard. The installation of the new surface has significantly improved the quality of the Multi-Use Games Area, and the project has delivered the intended improvements to both safety and usability.

Have there been any changes, such as new clubs wanting to use the facility?

Since the improvements were made, there has been increased interest in the facility. Local groups and sports clubs have shown interest in using the Multi-Use Games Area, and the upgraded surface has made it more suitable for organised sessions as well as informal community use.
