Artificial Grass Safe Play & Sensory Gardens for SEN Schools

Artificial grass for SEN schools creating fun, interactive learning environments.

STM is proud to have worked in the provision of artificial grass for SEN schools, with the aim of enhancing the life of children who don’t always have the same opportunities to play in mainstream play areas.

What Are EPIC SEN School Playgrounds?

For over 15 years, Synthetic Turf Management has been delivering our EPIC (Educational Play in Colour) system to a wide range of customers, including SEN (Special Educational Needs) schools. Designed to provide a safe, inclusive, and stimulating environment, EPIC is the perfect cost-effective surfacing solution. It can be installed over existing tarmac or created from scratch on natural grass, transforming outdoor spaces into engaging and accessible play areas tailored to the needs of SEN students.

What Are the Benefits of the EPIC System for SEN Schools?

The EPIC system is highly versatile, offering tailored designs and features that address the unique requirements of SEN students. Whether it’s a flat surface, a sloped area, or even an uneven space around mounds and tunnels, EPIC adapts to a variety of landscapes while prioritising safety and sensory engagement.

Key benefits include:

  • Durable and Accessible: Made from 18mm thick, sand-dressed artificial turf, EPIC is both hard-wearing and soft to the touch, supporting wheelchair use, children’s bikes, and daily activity.
  • Sensory Appeal: With 8 vibrant colours, including bright shades like magenta pink and calming greens, the EPIC system provides a visually stimulating experience ideal for SEN students.
  • Safety First: The surface is slip-resistant and features a tested shock pad with critical fall height protection of up to 2.0 metres, making it safe for climbing frames and other play equipment.
  • Inclusive Design: Creates a clean, safe, and imaginative environment that fosters interaction and exploration.

Can We Have Themed and Sensory Designs?

Customers can choose from a variety of colours and include sensory-focused designs such as calming shapes, tactile patterns, or interactive games like snakes and ladders. Replacing natural grass or concrete with synthetic turf can be an excellent way to maximise the potential of a small space. Playground games can be brought to life with colourful markings, from the traditional hopscotch to an exciting underwater world. We know that every child deserves to have a great experience in the playground, and so always strive to listen to every school’s needs and tailor our product to suit them. Safety is key when designing artificial turf for schools; we provide various options to make this the case, such as shock pads.

Artificial turf is becoming an increasingly popular choice for schools across the UK. Fake grass is easily maintained and safe for every age group, further, at STM we offer ongoing maintenance plans and resurfacing options to make sure you get the most out of your synthetic turf surface.

Synthetic turf ‘Under the Sea’ themed colour playground surface – Severndale Primary School in Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

Synthetic Turf Management were extremely pleased with the results of the project we undertook with Severndale Specialist School. It’s a true success story regarding artificial grass for SEN schools. Working alongside Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors and Mike Russel Landscaping, we designed and installed a sea-life themed safe play area. Mike Russel says:

“The garden was a winner – maybe not top prize, but we were delighted to be awarded one of Shropshire Horticultural Society’s Gold Medals for our wonderful seaside space working with Synthetic Turf Management & Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors.”

We worked with Carillion on a joint project at James Cook Hospital (Cleveland Unit) in designing a sensory garden for children. The Cleveland Unit provides specialist education for children with learning difficulties and other developmental challenges across the North East of England. The Cleveland Unit’s Liz Pickard says:

“The Cleveland Unit offers early identification and intervention for children with complex and special educational needs, we now have the ability to use the sensory garden all year round to assist us with our multi disciplinary assessments in the assessment nursery and joint education.”
