Shortly after pricing we were awarded the contract and despite the short notice we managed to fit the project into our busy summer schedule and pushed ahead.
Work began in July 2024 with the main contractor doing the sub-base work which they asked STM to consult on for design and build. The site was on a difficult plateau with a large crossfall from side to side but the school wanted to maintain the falls of the area without the need for retaining walls so we worked with them to create the MUGA sub-base and drainage designs and removed the requirement for a shock pad so the grass would sit directly onto a dynamic stone base as we felt a preformed pad would move given the fall and the base we were installing on.
The new twin bar, super rebound fencing we supplied to the main contractor was also delivered and installed at this time, despite the lateness of the order we managed to work with the groundworkers on site to split the fencing delivery into 2 parts to allow them to start part of the work and continue the fence install around us toward the end of the installation rather delay the project.
Once the base and fencing had been completed STM came in to install TigerTurf Championship 50 to the new 2000m2 area. The surface went down really well and even in bad weather towards the end of the summer we managed to get it installed and infill distributed evenly across the surface within 7 days.
The school asked for football and netball markings to be marked on to the pitch which is unusual on 3G however the school were insistent so they could do more than just football in the area for PE. We have suggested to them that the ball bounce won’t be correct but if the children are wearing the correct footwear for football, they can continue with the sports they wish to play.
Overall the school is pleased with the new area and we were thrilled to hand this over to them with the main contractor in mid-September which meant minimal disruption to the school making use of the playground and their new MUGA.
