MUGA Pitch: The Specification, Size & Dimensions and Costings

17th July 2018

A MUGA Pitch (or multi use games area) is a popular choice for schools, sports clubs, leisure and community centres all over the UK. But in terms of MUGA pitch specification, size and dimensions, it can be easily confusing. So, we have put together this short blog on what you need to know.

First and foremost, it is important to understand that a MUGA pitch can vary completely from job to job. This depends on the sports requirements requested by each individual client.

MUGA Pitch Specification

STM would recommend a MUGA specification with the following:

  • Compacted stone base
  • Tarmac layer of base course, insitu pad, wearing course (or a combination)
  • Fencing for a MUGA pitch should be twin bar and three metres high

MUGA Pitch Size and Dimensions

Generally, MUGAs tend to be around the same size as a tennis court, this is because the most popular sports are:

  • Tennis (23.77m x 10.97m)
  • Netball (30.5m x 15.25m)
  • Basketball (28m x 14m)
  • 5v5 Football (various sizes)

If a client wanted to include all of these different sports the total area size would need to be 34.5m x 19.25m= 664.13 square metres. This would also allow safe run offs for all sports.

*It is advisable to have recesses of at least 4m x 2m on each end of the MUGA pitch to allow storage of equipment (e.g. goals) and maximise playing space.

MUGA Pitch Costings

MUGA prices vary completely from job to job and this would depend on the following:

  • Fencing and floodlighting requirements
  • Current condition of the base and required works
  • Turf type chosen and line markings needed
  • Access to the site

*Please note that prices could change significantly on each job so to ensure an accurate quote, call STM on 01642 713 555

MUGA Pitch Turf

Depending on the usage of each sport you wish to play and what the purpose of the MUGA is for (e.g. a revenue source) will be reflected in the recommended turf type.

If a client wanted mainly football but with a bit of mini hockey, a 3G surface would likely be recommended.

If a client wanted a full mix of different sports including netball, tennis and football of equal priority, we would recommend a short pile sand dressed product.

Sport England Funding for MUGAs

If you are being funded by Sport England, there are certain requirements for sizes of the pitches and therefore before putting in a bid, you will need to ensure that you have the minimum footprint requirements for the largest sports you want to use the MUGA for.
