We love designing playgrounds. The scope for what’s possible is huge; the only real limit is our - and the schools’ we work with - imaginations. Brightly coloured and wacky, sophisticated and sporty, calming and relaxing - every playground we install is crafted to fit its school down to a tee. With all this playground fever going around the STM workplace, we got to thinking… Where exactly did the whole concept originate from? We had to find out.
The idea of the playground came about in Germany. It was a concept that was developed as a method for imbuing children with a sense of fair play and good manners. In many ways, this thinking has remained the same, with it now being common knowledge that play contributes significantly to the social and emotional development of children. It’s no secret that spending time in a playground helps teach a child values such as fairness and respect.
The first purpose built public access playground was actually built in Manchester, England, in 1959. Over time, though, they started popping up in other countries and are now, of course, common place.
One of the biggest moments in playground history was the introduction of ‘junk playgrounds’. The idea was introduced in the period following World War II by landscape architect, Lady Allen of Hurtwood. These playgrounds were made, literally, from junk - well, recycled junk and rubble left over from the Blitz. Hurtwood campaigned for for facilities for children that were living in and amongst high rise developments - with no room to play. She even published several books on the matter, which helped spread the word worldwide.
Playgrounds have developed over time to become essential areas for children to grow, learn and develop. Today there are more choices than ever when it comes to play equipment, surfacing and uses for playgrounds. We’ve seen schools across the UK use STM EPIC playgrounds as outdoor classrooms, for sports day and of course, for good old fashioned fun.
If you’re school is in need of a playground revamp, we’d love to talk!
