St Gerards School Trust | MUGA Upgrade Project February 2025

4th February 2025

Creating a Safer, Smarter Multi-Sport Space for the Future

18 months ago, St Gerards School Trust approached Synthetic Turf Management (STM) with a vision: to transform their ageing tarmac Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) into a versatile, high-quality artificial grass facility fit for modern school sport.

Covering 1,500m², the brief was not only to upgrade the surface but also to improve the safety, appearance, and long-term functionality of the entire space.

Our Design Approach & Recommendations

After a full site assessment and consultation, STM proposed a complete redesign of the area to unlock its full potential:

  • Removal of the existing breezeblock walls, opening up the MUGA and making it feel more inviting and user-friendly.

  • Installation of a new 3m high twin-bar fence system, including super rebound panels to the lower 1.2m to withstand heavy use and increase safety.

  • Specification of a 10mm shockpad beneath the surface to enhance shock absorption and player comfort.

  • Installation of Sterling Turf Durapro, a robust synthetic surface accredited to FIH Multi-Use standards, complete with a 12-year warranty.

A True Multi-Sport Solution

The upgraded MUGA now supports Tennis, Netball, and Football, making it an incredibly flexible facility for day-to-day school use and extracurricular sport. Clear multi-sport line markings ensure easy transitions between activities, helping maximise usage and participation.

Looking Ahead: Community Use & Lighting Plans

To further increase value and community benefit, the school plans to rent out the MUGA in the evenings. As part of this future-proofing strategy, they are exploring the addition of floodlighting, pending planning permissions and funding.
