Artificial Grass: The History

20th July 2016

In this article it’s all about the history of artificial grass and how it has evolved over the decades to produce that fantastic artificial grass surface that we love!

Of course we know that grass is used for all sorts of projects including playgrounds, gardens, commercial use and of course sports! In fact, sports is where it all started.

Decade: 1960’s, place Houston, Texas. The multiple purpose sports facility, the Astrodome, was fitted with new ‘AstroTurf’ since then it has become a widely recognised name for all types of artificial grass. However, for this purpose the ‘AstroTurf’ was used for the Major League Baseball pitch. Soon after, everyone jumped on the new trend and many sports facilities throughout the US and Canada were implementing the new artificial grass.

Another high profile team to opt for the new artificial grass in substitute for their natural surface were the Philadelphia Eagles:

It wasn’t until 1970 when Artificial grass came to Europe. This was made with a slightly different way of manufacturing using different materials, not nylon but polypropylene which was a cheaper substitute at that time.

The 1990’s saw a boom in domestic gardens as more homeowners were recognising the benefits of such a fantastic product! By this time artificial grass was much more advanced and looked more attractive than it ever had before. Soon after businesses opted for commercial use artificial grass including logo mats.
