Phonics in the Playground- Learning Through Play

10th October 2016

Phonics are a huge part of early education and are detrimental in the learning of children to read. We understand the emphasis schools place on phonics and how important this clever tool is. All primary schools have hundreds of learning tools to help reiterate the ‘sh’ or ‘ch’ or ‘oa’ or ‘oo’ (we could go on for ever!) but one thing there seems to be a lack of, is phonics in the outdoor environment. Phonics in the playground is a clever means that we provide here at Synthetic Turf Management that we believe really helps to transfer learning to different environments and helps with learning and of course remembering!

“Research shows that when phonics is taught in a structured way, starting with the easiest sounds and progressing through to the most complex, it is the most effective way of teaching young children to read. It is particularly helpful for 5- to 7-year-old children”- The National Curriculum

Reading Can Change Lives

We all know that the government is highlighting the importance on phonics and stressing that it heavily improves the literacy of pupils. “A key part of this commitment is promoting the importance of reading for pleasure. We want teachers and school librarians to support children to enjoy reading, and enable them to read a wide range of good quality literature”- The National Archives

So why shouldn’t we add phonics into a fun and care-free environment!

How?

As synthetic turf playground installers we provide, supply and install different playgrounds all over the country. A major part of these installations is the use of phonics. These can be used as part of playtime or lessons can even be taken outside!

A simple colourful shape with a vibrant phonic could do the trick!

There are so many different options to choose from to increase the awareness of phonics, we just urge that this very important part of education should be in a place where pupils spend up to two hours of their day.
