Synthetic Turf Management was first invited to this school back in 2020 to provide a feasibility study for a proposed Astro turf Multi Use Games Area (MUGA). The natural field had drainage issues and uneven, leaving it unsuitable for sport and play most of the year.

The school also needed design that took into account the possibly of contamination of the existing sub base, as the site was previously the old school with rubble and disconnected services.

Synthetic Turf Management were appointed main contractor due to our high standards of in-house design consultation, industry certification with (SAPCA) and holding pre-qualifications with Constructionline (Gold) and Builders Profile.

As part of the design process, we decided to break out the existing 600m2 tarmac court and reuse it as part of the sub-base to save on carting away costs and also import new stone.

The school was very keen to use the area for as many sports as possible which is where we came up with the design of having a four-lane running track surrounding a netball court to maximise the use for a daily mile track and also numerous other sports for PE and play times.

The colour design was set out to have a big impact for the children with the rust track and blue inner court. The school loved the idea of the different colours to really make it stand out and make it a fun space for the children.

We built the pitch using an envelope system with geotextile membrane layers to prevent contamination and hold the dynamic stone base which was built to a 250mm sub-base. The wearing course layer at 50mm of 6mm to dust stone to give it a solid level finish compacted and rolled to falls.

Drainage was also installed as the field flooded during heavy periods of rain. We decided to install drainage at 6m centres to aid the drainage of the pitch and give more attenuation under the pitch before it was taken to an existing storm drain.

Finally, we installed a 10mm shock pad and Evo Pro which meant that the system being installed meets FIH, Gen 2 Multi use standards.

Now completed the children are enjoying use of it every single day and are staying fit and healthy through sport and play.
