£30m funding boost for tennis and school sport

18th October 2021

You might already have seen the news about the government and LTA announcing a £30m package to refurbish more than 4,500 public tennis courts in the most deprived parts of the UK. The funding is designed to support a new generation of players to get into the sport and will see £21.9m committed by the government and £8.4m by the LTA.

Behind the scenes SAPCA has been in close liaison with the LTA to support the initiative, discussing various aspects such as the scope of the required refurbishment work, the standards that should be achieved, the procurement of the projects, and the timescales for the programme, which is intended to start in 2022. In short, there’s a strong desire to capitalise on the current boost to tennis from Emma Raducanu’s amazing Grand Slam success, and to ensure that this very significant investment is put to the best possible use for the specific tennis facilities that will benefit.
