Manchester School, Reaping the Rewards for Innovation

21st July 2015

At this year’s Youth Sport Trust Innovation Awards the winner of the Secondary PE category was the very deserving Oakwood Academy in Manchester. Oakwood stood out in the judging for its outward facing PE department whose passion for sport and learning puts their fantastic pupils at the heart of everything they do. As a SEN school Oakwood go the extra mile in everything they do and piloting the 2014 PE National Curriculum a year early and developing their young people’s social skills which are some areas that made the school a very deserving winner.

You can watch Oakwood collect the award at the YST innovation awards below.

Synthetic Turf Management specialise in transforming school playgrounds by designing and installing artificial turf play surfaces in schools to maximise physical education and sport for learners. This passion for sport in education made it a privilege to sponsor the YST innovation awards Secondary PE category and to supply the prize for the much deserving Oakwood Academy.

The prize was a hockey master-class England Hockey star and YST ambassador Charlotte Hartley. STM went down to Oakwood for the day to meet the PE staff, the pupils and Charlotte and too have a look around the school that won the STM sponsored prize. Upon arriving it was clear that the right school had won. It was a pleasure meeting the Oakwood PE department and having the opportunity to watch them pass on their passion for sport and learning. Charlotte was equally as impressive as she passed on her expert hockey knowledge to the pupils who loved every minute of it. It was great to hear “Hockey is my favourite sport” from some of the pupils and the introduction of hockey to Oakwood Academy’s curriculum is fantastic as a lasting legacy has been left from the award and the prize.
